Some boil the bark of the neem tree. Some grind on stone the green leaves. Some fry them in oil to make balm to put on sores arising from scabies, eczema and the lot. A great medicine for skin diseases. Some eat the green leaves raw or sauté with bringle. Excellent for the liver. Snapped roughly from the branches, so many chew the twigs. Good for the teeth and the gum. Doctors are full of praise for the medicinal value the Neem tree offers. The elders advice – “the breeze through the neem leaves acts as mosquito repellant. Very healthy. Never chop off a Neem tree. Never!”
Nobody chops her but nobody takes care of her either. She grows wild and bushy farthest from the house at the corner of the garden collecting heaps of garbage at her trunk.
One day a stranger stopped by. He looked at the neem tree. Mesmerized! He didn’t scrape her bark or snapped her twigs or even plucked her leaves. Just watched her. Enthralled! Then he remarked: “Oh! How beautiful! How lustrous the leaves are! And how pretty the flowers are. As if a bouquet of stars had descended from the blue sky upon the green earth. Wow!” After watching her for a little longer the stranger walked away.
The neem tree wanted to go away with the man. But how could she? Her roots had gone too deep inside the soil. So, she stood still amidst the garbage heap at the far corner of the garden. The gifted daughter-in-law of that house has exactly the same fate.
